Cosmic Powers

Kim Jong-Un, the supreme leader of North Korea, claimed that, at his father’s death, he had been granted new Celestial Powers; he could shrink or enlarge the moon and did so every night, so that the Western Running Dog Capitalist Lackies and the world would understand his power.  Jim Howie, from Amarillo, was pretty sure that he couldn’t really do that, but the moon did seem to get smaller as the night wore on. . . . .  David, Sf.G.

Fear of Leeches

Until Gilbert–watching the classic movie channel–had seen the old Humphrey Bogart/Katharine Hepburn classic, African Queen, and had seen Bogey covered with leeches, he had never thought much about the problem.  Now he was almost dehydrated, staying out of the water, fearing that leeches would attack and suck him dry of blood while in the water in spite of the tough scales that armored most of his body. . . . .  David, Sf.G.

Skinny Legs

Eddy had to face it: he had skinny legs.  No matter what he did–hundreds of reps on the leg press, high protein drinks, squats, or jogging miles on the beach–he was never going to have legs like the NFL linebackers  or like J. J. Watt  . . . .  David, Sf.G.

End of the World

While visiting the Texas Gulf Coast for the first time, Hank had fallen asleep on the porch in the rocking chair on the warm February afternoon and  had awakened with a start.  Was that the end of the world or just one of those fancy Texas sunsets he’d heard so much about? . . . . .  David, Sf.G.

Drama Queen

Whenever her friends at grad school talked about beautiful things from home that they missed, Elly, from the Texas Gulf Coast, always had a story about how things were bigger and/or better in Texas.  When it came to sunsets, it was pretty hard to argue with the picture Elly’s father sent  of the previous day’s sunset. . . . .  David, Sf.G.

Skipping Lunch

Will was a dreamer, and day dreaming often made him lose track of hours at a time.  Earlier today, the water was so still that he could see his reflection, and he kept trying to picture himself in the starring role of some new Animal Planet, Nature, or Nat Geo reality series featuring the complex lives of, well, birds like himself, and their interactions with other creatures–you know, the “Bird Whisperer”.  Once he realized he had missed lunch with his day dreaming, he figured, “What the heck, let’s skip lunch and go straight to dinner. I’ll have my people call your people when I’ve made reservations.” . . . . .  David, Sf.G.
