Jack and the Beanstalk

When Jack, from Redhook, Brooklyn, told his buddies–Jim from Far Rockaway and Herbie from Poughkeepsie–he was moving to Arizona, they thought him nuts–what could Arizona have that New York didn’t?  To demonstrate his sanity, Jack flew them all to Arizona.  While checking out a flea market, Jack bought what were labeled “Magic Beans,” and again his buddies gave snorts of derision. But when they got out of their hotel rooms the next morning and saw where Jack had planted one of the beans, they were somewhat less critical.. . . . . David, Sf.G.

The Finger

The rock finger in the Arizona desert had been there far longer than any of them.  The oldest Indians claimed that the people that came before them said it pointed to the North Star; the scientific wags claimed it was a sign of earth’s contempt for mankind in general; yet others said it was nature checking to see which way the wind was blowing.  The only thing everyone agreed on was that it was consistent, it hadn’t moved much. . . . .  David, Sf.G.
